Done right, it’s about as New Orleans as it can be. . . .

    PH factor: 8.5 Recipe Ingredients: Cocktail o 1 ½ ounces Bombay Sapphire gin o ½ ounce Cointreau o ½ ounce Luxardo Maraschino o 1 tablespoon Remy Martin VSOP cognac o ½ ounce fresh lemon juice Method: 1. Shake cocktail ingredients over ice. 2. Serve up in a cocktail glass. Remarks: We had to work hard with this drink. We not only changed the proportions of the ingredients, we also added maraschino. We think it now has the gravitas its name deserves. . . .

  • Hemingway Daiquiri

    PH factor: 8.5 Recipe Ingredients: Cocktail o 2 ounces Flor de Caña Extra Seco rum o ½ ounce Luxardo Maraschino o ½ ounce grapefruit juice o ½ ounce fresh lime juice o ¼ ounce Simple Syrup, see: Syrups etc. Garnish o lime wheel or wedge Method: 1. Moisten the rim of a cocktail glass with lime and invert it into a shallow dish of sugar to coat the rim of the glass. 2. Shake cocktail ingredients over ice or add ¾ cup of ice to the cocktail ingredients and blend for a frozen daiquiri. 3. Strain into the prepared glass. 4. Garnish with lime wheel or wedge. Remarks: This is what the Hemingway Daiquiri is today. It is similar to what was created in 1921 by Constantino Ribailagua at the El Floridita in Havana Cuba for Ernest Hemingway. Rumor is "Papa" didn’t like it. See our Papa Doble Daiquiri for his version. We made this one frozen as frozen drinks are also attributed to Constantino. . . .

Shake cocktail ingredients over ice. 2. Serve up in a cocktail glass. 3. Garnish with orange peel. Remarks: This is very similar to today’s Brooklyn Cocktail but not the 1908 original.     PH factor: 9.0 Recipe Ingredients: Cocktail o 1 ½ ounces Woodford Reserve bourbon o ½ ounce Luxardo Maraschino o ¾ ounce fresh lemon juice o 6 ounces Lindemans Kriek lambic Method: 1. Shake cocktail ingredients except the lambic over ice. 2. Strain into a cocktail glass. 3. Top with lambic. Remarks: This comes across very much as a cocktail, albeit a large one. The Kriek lambic (sour cherry) is primarily a flavoring agent but it also adds a little sparkle. . . .

    PH factor: 9.0 Recipe Ingredients: Cocktail o 1 ½ ounce Tullamore DEW Irish Whiskey o ¾ ounce green Chartreuse o ¾ ounce Luxardo Maraschino o ¾ ounce fresh lime juice Garnish o lime peel Method: 1. Shake cocktail ingredients over ice. 2. Serve up in a cocktail glass. 3. Garnish with lime peel. Remarks: We liked the original recipe but felt it lacked presence. So, we increased the whiskey a tad. Clever us. Enjoy. . . .

  • Tuxedo Cocktail

    PH factor: 8.0 Recipe Ingredients: Cocktail o ¼ ounce Pernod Absinthe Supérieure o 2 ounces Finlandia vodka o 1 ounce Lillet Blanc o ½ ounce Luxardo Maraschino o 1 dash Hella Orange bitters Garnish o lemon peel Method: 1. Swirl absinthe to coat the inside of a martini glass and discard the excess. 2. Stir remaining cocktail ingredients over ice in a mixing glass. 3. Strain into the prepared glass. 4. Garnish with lemon peel. Remarks: It's very similar to the Imperial Cocktail but with an anise flavored liqueur. You can also use anisette or Sambuca but you will find that you need to adjust the recipe as all anise flavored liqueurs are not created equally. . . .

    PH factor: 8.0 Recipe Ingredients: Cocktail o 4 blueberries o 2 ounces 1800 Silver tequila o ½ ounce Schladerer Edel-Kirsch liqueur o ½ ounce Luxardo Maraschino o ½ ounce fresh lime juice o 1 tablespoon Tillen Farms Merry Maraschino cherry juice Garnish o blueberries o mint sprig Method: 1. Muddle berries in a cocktail shaker. 2. Add cracked ice and remaining cocktail ingredients and shake to chill. 3. Pour all into in a double Old Fashioned glass. 4. Garnish with mint and blueberries. Remarks: We reduced the lime juice by half from the original recipe. This can be made with frozen berries although we suggest fresh, when in season. . . .

Remarks: Attributed to Phil Ward, this is yet another of the mezcal-based cocktails for which he is held in such high regard. . . .
